Tip: Get high res photos for contacts on your WP7 device

Accept yous experienced this problem? You get your new Windows Phone, you sync upwards your contacts and then you add a few to the Start screen, using those great dynamic squares. And so you detect it: the terrible, crappy resolution and blurriness. You retrieve to yourself: "That'south not how information technology looks on the commercial!"

Well, we think nosotros figured it out. Information technology's not Microsoft's error and information technology's non a bug. We're going to bet you sync with our frienemy Google, right?

That's the culprit. Google. Don't believe me or think we're alone? Meet here and here for starters.

What happens is when you take a photo on your telephone, add it to contacts then information technology syncs back to Google'southward servers they then downsize the photo and resync it back to you. Awesome, eh?

What is the solution? There are two and nosotros'll particular both later on the break...

The Microsoft Alive solution

Probably the easiest.  Bold you've synced your Google contacts with your Live contacts (merely export as a .CSV and import into Alive) you lot'll accept linked accounts for all of your contacts one for Google, 1 for Windows Live.

  1. Find the contact with the terrible photograph and hit "edit" (the Pencil icon)
  2. Select "Edit Windows Alive"
  3. Select "Add Photograph"
  4. Add your high resolution photo; crop if necessary
  5. Save

That's information technology. Windows Telephone 7 gives priority to the Windows Alive contact photo over Google'south. Now, on your pinned contact on the start screen, it should be the nice shiny high res one.

The downside is yous have to practise that for all your contacts with crappy photos. Sorry, there'southward no easy way around that. Arraign Google for getting you in this mess.

The Google Solution (?)

We haven't tried this one ourselves but it should piece of work.

  1. Log into your Google business relationship
  2. Settings --> Full general (1st tab)
  3. Under "Contacts' pictures" select "Only show pictures that I've chosen for my contacts"
  4. Salve, get out

At present if yous edit a contact on your phone and add a high resolution photo, it should stay that mode when you lot sync dorsum and forth.

Overall, it's a hurting to have to get through this only in our stance, information technology's worth it. Those high res pinned contact photos look fantastic on Windows Phone 7, so why non take advantage of it, while also moving away from Google's lame low-res imagery? (Oh and the aforementioned poor quality prototype issue is present on Android devices too, so don't feel bad).

Promise that helps.
